We don't have
a fallback plan.

Joe and Lilly Colucci have served in Zambia for 20 years. Now, facing Lilly's tenth surgery with no safety net, they're trusting God — and the people who stand with them. The Giver Army was one of them.

“Seven years. My wife's tenth surgery. And we don't have a fallback plan.”

The story

Twenty years of home. One road they can't walk alone.

This coming January marks 20 years in Zambia for Joe and Lilly Colucci. No one in Joe's family had ever even held a passport. He met his wife there. They raised two boys there. When Joe talks about it, he doesn't reach for the word mission. “It's not even a calling,” he says. “It's just home.”

Home, for them, has meant work. Training 45 leaders. Getting missionaries into remote areas most people never reach. Hosting 300 people. The kind of ministry that doesn't clock out — the kind where a rare evening they'd finally set aside for themselves ends the moment the front door opens and the phone rings, and instead they spend seven hours on the road because someone needs them. Everyone came home safe. That's who they are.

For Joe and Lilly, there was no going back a long time ago — theirs is a Red Sea kind of calling, the water closed behind them. Which is what makes this season so heavy. Lilly is facing her tenth surgery. Insurance won't cover it. And the question that finds Joe in the quiet is the one no husband should have to carry: “Am I not working hard enough to afford medical care for my wife?”

He'll tell you the honest answer is to trust God — and to trust the people who partner with them. But this isn't a single surgery with a tidy ending. It's the start of a multi-year road, and for a while there it felt like standing at the edge of it alone.

Then the crowd showed up. The Giver Army — believers across the country giving small monthly gifts into one shared mission — came alongside Joe and Lilly with a $2,500 gift to help catalyze their support. Not the whole road. The first stretch of it — proof that they weren't walking it by themselves.

Joe's response was simple, and he meant every word of it: “We appreciate it. We really do.”

That's what a crowd for the crowdless looks like. Not a rescue that ends the story, but a people who show up first — so that the family carrying the weight knows the next hands are already reaching.

The $2,500 gift was a Care & Relief grant from the Giver Army, a program of GiveSendGo Charities, Inc., a 501(c)(3) public charity (EIN 88-3776392), a separate legal entity from GiveSendGo.com LLC. “Help Lilly cover surgery expenses” is an individual fundraiser hosted on the GiveSendGo.com platform; gifts made there go to that campaign, not to GiveSendGo Charities.
